EXPLAINED: HOW INDIA CAN BECOME SECOND TEAM AFTER AUSTRALIA TO WIN ALL ICC TROPHIES

India finally ended their 11-year-old drought for an ICC trophy when they defeated South Africa in the final of the T20 World Cup 2024, as they lifted the trophy for the second time after 2007. India has thus become the second side after Australia with the most number of ICC trophies (7). However, they are yet to beat Australia's record of being the only side to win all ICC trophies right now. The Men in Blue, however, can achieve this feat as early as June 2025.

India have won all three ICC white ball trophies. They have won the ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy twice each, and thus have 6 trophies to their name. They have only one trophy that still eludes them and that is the ICC World Test Championship. India have qualified for both the finals in 2021 and 2023 but lost to New Zealand and Australia respectively. They now have a chance to qualify for the WTC 2025 final in June that will be held at Lord's. If they manage to win they will complete their full cabinet of ICC trophies.

India are currently at the top of the WTC table with a PCT of 68.52. India now have three Test series- at home against Bangladesh and New Zealand and an away series against Australia. Hence, they have a high chance that they reach the WTC 2025 final. If they win that final, then India will become the second team after Australia to win all four ICC trophies.

India Slam South Africa In T20 World Cup 2024 Final

India won the toss in the all-important final and elected to bat first. They got off to a horror start, as in just the second over of the game, Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant departed in quick succession off the ball of Keshav Maharaj. Suryakumar Yadav also departed a few overs later for just 3 runs.

It was then Axar Patel and Virat Kohli who stayed put and managed to steady the ship with a partnership of 72 runs. Axar got out after scoring a brilliant 47 from 31 balls. After his departure it was Kohli who took the charge, as he finally came back to form and slammed 76 runs from 51 balls. Shivam Dube also score 27 runs from 16 balls, as India managed to score 176/7 in their 20 overs.

India got off to a good start as they got two early wickets of Reeza Hendricks and Aiden Markram. However, Quinton de Kock and Tristan Stubbs got the Proteas back into the game, before Heinrich Klaasen slammed a 22-ball half-century to almost get the game in the favour of South Africa. However, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya got the Men in Blue back on track from the jaws of defeat. Pandya picked up 3 wickets, while Bumrah scalped 2.
