RETIRING DAVID WARNER HANDS OVER BATON TO JAKE FRASER-MCGURK: 'ALL YOURS NOW CHAMPION'

Australia's David Warner seems to have drawn the curtains on his international career. The retiring opener on Tuesday shared a photo with star batter Jake Fraser-McGurk from the Caribbean, urging the young batting hero to take over from him. Warner is yet to officially announce his retirement, but he had said before the T20 World Cup 2024 that it would be the last tournament for Australia.

David Warner's international retirement was sealed on Tuesday when Australia were officially knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2024 in the Super 8 stage. Australia lost to India and Afghanistan in the Super 8 stage, failing to make it to the semi-final of the tournament. The 2021 champions were shown the door after Afghanistan defeated Bangladesh on Tuesday and secured the second spot in Group 1 of the Super 8 stage.

Warner shared a photo of him and Jake Fraser-McGurk enjoying a mug of beer in the Caribbean and captioned it: "All yours now champion."

Notably, Fraser-McGurk travelled with the Australian squad as a reserve player. The Delhi Capitals opener was not picked in Australia's 15-man squad despite his sensational debut season in the Indian Premier League 2024 season. The 22-year-old scored 330 runs in 9 matches at a strike rate of over 230 for the Capitals.

Australia picked the experienced David Warner and partnered him with Travis Head at the top for the T20 World Cup. Warner did not disappoint as the veteran batter hit 178 runs from 7 matches, including two fifties for Australia.

Notably, David Warner announced his ODI retirement after the World Cup last year and played a his last Test during the home summer against Pakistan. Warner, however, has left the doors open for a comeback in next year's Champions Trophy, saying he would be available if Australia needed him.

Warner would have hoped to end his career in T20I cricket on a high, but Australia failed to make it past the Super 8 stage. Warner was part of the side that won the T20 World Cup in 2021 in the UAE.

Warner will continue to play franchise-based T20 cricket leagues across the globe, including the IPL. On the other hand, McGurk is expected to be the next big thing in Australian cricket. The 22-year-old has already shown signs that he is set for greatness with a sensational start to his international and IPL career.
