'WHENEVER ROHIT SHARMA STEPS AWAY FROM TESTS AND ODIS...': VIRENDER SEHWAG PICKS SHUBMAN GILL AS NEXT INDIA CAPTAIN

India unveiled their 18-man squad for their next month’s tour of Zimbabwe during which they will take part in a five-match T20I series. The team will be led by Shubman Gill and is brimming with youngsters with Mukesh Kumar at 30 being the oldest member of the squad.

With the T20I regulars along with the senior members currently busy with the T20 World Cup, the selectors seem to have given them a much-needed rest after six months of non-stop cricket.

Interestingly, the selectors named Gill ahead of the likes of Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad who are also part of the tour. Batting legend Virender Sehwag feels that the team management has taken the right decision keeping the future in mind.

Rohit, who leads India across formats, is nearing retirement and whenever he calls time on his Test and ODI career, Sehwag feels, Gill will be the right replacement.

“Shubman Gill lambi race ka ghoda hai (He’s one for the long haul),” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz. “He plays all three formats, he had a brilliant last year. He was a bit unlucky to miss out on a spot in the 2024 T20 World Cup squad. But to me, this is a right decision.”

“If tomorrow Rohit steps away from Tests and ODIs, then Shubman Gill will be his right replacement as captain. So the right captain has been picked keeping the future in mind,” he added.

Former India cricketer Manoj Tiwayr agreed with Sehwag but added that the team must build a team around the captain.

“I agree with his (Sehwag’s) point. Shubman Gill has been playing ODIs consistently and performing too. But you look at our history, we appoint the best batter as captain. So in future, they should pick the captain first, doesn’t matter if he’s regular in all formats or not. Appoint a captain first and then build a team around him,” Tiwary said.

The series gets underway from July 6.
