YOU HAVE GOT TO TAKE YOUR HATS OFF TO A TEAM LIKE INDIA FOR LIFTING TROPHY: AIDEN MARKRAM

South African captain Aiden Markram lauded the Indian team for finally crossing the final hurdle and lifting the trophy. Team India created history as they won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy at the Kensington Oval, Barbados on June 30, Saturday. It was a 'gut-wrenching' loss for South Africa, who fell short by just 7 runs to lift their maiden World Cup trophy. The Proteas had made it to their first-ever World Cup final.

South Africa were on the verge of shedding the 'chokers' tag, but the Indian bowlers staged one of the most dramatic comebacks in the history of the T20 World Cup final. South Africa were cruising in the chase as they needed just 30 runs in the last 30 balls. However, Hardik Pandya picked the wicket of Heinrich Klaasen and the equation came to 16 needed off the last over. India managed to defend the total of 176 runs and win the title.

"We are one step closer"

While addressing the post-match press-conference, Markram said that they came a step closer this time and will look to lift their first-ever title the next time.

"Hopefully it's one step closer. It's tournament cricket, it's tough cricket, it's not easy to win trophies and you've got to take your hats off to a team like India for lifting the trophy. A lot of hard work goes into it. But yeah, we'd like to think we're one step closer and hopefully moving forward we can get that first win and it can be a snowball effect of quite a few to come," Markram said.

India creates history

The Proteas captain was 'gutted' with the loss and admitted that the total was chaseable. He was proud of the team for how they batted as well as bowled.

"Gutted for the time being. It'll take some time for us to have a really good reflection on a really good campaign the group had. Obviously, for the time being, like I mentioned, it hurts quite a bit. Having said that, I'm incredibly proud of this group of players and everyone involved with the team. I feel they bowled well. Don't think there was a whole lot to work with regards to the pitch. Thought we did well to restrict them to what we thought was a chaseable total. Thought we batted really well as well, and it came down to the wire," Markram said in the post-match presentation.

India lifted their 2nd ICC T20 World Cup trophy and ended their 14-year-long wait.
