Afghanistan, who are considered as the Dark Horses of every tournament they walk into have qualified for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup for the very first time. It also happens to be their first semi-final appearance in any ICC event across formats. Afghanistan's qualification means that Australia are down and out and have been eliminated from the race of semi-finals. The champions of the 2021 T20 World Cup faltered against Afghanistan and India and find themselves on the flight back home.
The entire cricketing fraternity and fans have been singing praises for Afghanistan and rightly so. They have played some outstanding cricket and to term their semi-final qualification as an upset will be demeaning and will be an understatement at this point in time. Many journalists have also compared Afghanistan's T20 World Cup 2024 campaign with India's 1983 ODI World Cup winning campaign. A World Cup win is something that players hold in very high regard and is certainly no easy feat. Sachin had to play 6 ODI World Cup before he laid his hands on the silverware.
Afghanistan's heroics have also made India's 2011 ODI World Cup winning team happy and the members of that victorious squad took to X (formerly known as Twitter) and showered praise on the Afghan boys. Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh were among the few to acknowledge Afghanistan's achievement in the ongoing ICC Men's T20 World Cup.
