FROM 1983 ALL THE WAY TILL 2023: A LOOK BACK TO INDIA'S HISTORY IN ICC TOURNAMENT FINALS

Team India is heading to the T20 World Cup semi-final with the hope of securing their first ICC trophy since 2013. Their last title came in the form of the Champions Trophy after an MS Dhoni-led side crushed England in a rain-affected clash at Edgbaston in 2013. Since then, India has featured in the final of five ICC tournaments and lost on all occasions. The Asian giants won the first-ever major title in 1983 when Kapil Dev and his men defeated the mighty West Indies at Lord’s to win the World Cup.

India had to wait for 24 years for the second title until a young team, led by Dhoni, claimed the inaugural T20 World Cup. The Men in Blue replicated the success in the 2011 ODI World Cup, defeating Sri Lanka in the final. India will need to overcome an unbeaten South Africa in the final of the ongoing T20 World Cup. Ahead of the big-ticket clash, let’s take a look at their previous performances in the ICC tournament finals-

1983 World Cup:

India batted first in the final at Lord’s and registered 183 runs. The West Indies top-order fell victim to Madan Lal, who picked three wickets. Among the other Indian bowlers, Mohinder Amarnath also recorded a three-wicket haul as the Caribbean unit wrapped up their innings at 140 runs.

2000 Champions Trophy:

The then-Indian captain Sourav Ganguly struck a brilliant century in the final against New Zealand. With Sachin Tendulkar contributing 69 runs, India produced 264 runs in the first innings. New Zealand lost a few early wickets but an unbeaten 102-run knock by Chris Cairns brought them back to the contest. The Black Caps ultimately completed the chase in 49.4 overs.

2022 Champions Trophy:

Rain played a spoilsport after Sri Lanka scored 244 in the Champions Trophy final. On the reserve day, the islanders folded their innings with 222 runs before the match stopped due to weather issues. After the final match was called, India and Sri Lanka shared the title.

2003 ODI World Cup:

India suffered a batting collapse while chasing 360 runs against Australia. Only Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid shone with the bat as the Men in Blue fell 125 runs short of the target, losing all wickets in 39.2 overs.

2007 T20 World Cup:

India defended a 157-run target in Johannesburg to beat Pakistan in the final. Irfan Pathan was named the Player of the Match after fetching a three-wicket haul. Gautam Gambhir was the top-scorer for India with 75 runs.

2011 ODI World Cup:

It was a fairytale night in Mumbai where MS Dhoni struck a six to secure the second ODI World Cup title. After Sri Lanka posted 274 runs on the board, Gautam Gambhir stepped up with a game-changing 97-run knock. Dhoni remained unbeaten at 91 as India completed the chase with ten balls to spare.

2013 Champions Trophy:

It turned out to be a 20-over final due to heavy rain showers at Edgbaston. India could set a target of 130 runs on the slow wicket. England’s batters surrendered early in front of the Indian spinners and lost the match by five runs.

2014 T20 World Cup:

India enjoyed an unbeaten run throughout the campaign and beat South Africa by six wickets to reach the final. The MS Dhoni-led unit managed only 130 runs in the summit clash against Sri Lanka. The islanders held their nerves during the chase and won the match by 6 wickets.

2017 Champions Trophy:

The Indian batters failed to showcase their A-game after Pakistan put up 318 runs riding in Fakhar Zaman’s century. Mohammad Amir demolished the Indian top-order with the new ball. Hardik Pandya scored a gritty 76 but his efforts were not enough to change the course of the game.

2021 World Test Championship:

The batters looked quite pale in India’s maiden appearance at the WTC final. Facing New Zealand in Southampton, India registered 217 and 170 runs across two innings. The Kiwis lost only two wickets in the fourth-innings chase and secured an easy win.

2023 World Test Championship:

With Steve Smith and Travis Head notching hundreds, Australia produced 469 runs in the first innings. In response, India were bundled out for 296 runs. The Rohit Sharma-led side had a target of 444 in the last innings when they managed only 234 runs.

2023 ODI World Cup:

India had not lost a single match till reaching the final on home soil. The Australian pacers bowled smartly on the Ahmedabad surface, restricting the hosts to 240 runs. Travis Head went all guns blazing during the chase. The opener played a match-winning knock of 137 runs as Australia reached the target in 43 overs.
