VIRAT KOHLI RESPONDS TO PM NARENDRA MODI'S MESSAGE POST RETIREMENT: 'THANK YOU FOR YOUR VERY KIND WORDS & ENCOURAGEMENT'

Virat Kohli has thanked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his words of appreciation after India’s historic victory in the T20 World Cup 2024 in the Caribbean. The men in blue defeated South Africa by 7 runs to be crowned as the new world champions. Kohli, who went through a lean patch throughout the tournament, played a memorable knock in the finals and bagged the Player of the Match. However, he left his fans stunned by announcing his retirement from the shortest format of the game after winning the title.

As India ended the 11-year-old drought of ICC titles on Saturday, PM Modi congratulated the entire team on the emphatic victory. The Indian Prime Minister also spoke to Kohli, captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid over a phone call, congratulating them on their remarkable stints with the Indian T20I side.

Taking to microblogging site X, PM Modi lauded Kohli for bringing laurels to the country and said the shortest format of the game will miss him.

“Dear @imVkohli, Glad to have spoken to you. Like the innings in the Finals, you have anchored Indian batting splendidly. You’ve shone in all forms of the game. T20 Cricket will miss you but I am confident you’ll continue to motivate the new generation of players,” PM Modi’s post read.

On Monday, Kohli responded to the post and thanked the Indian Prime Minister for his encouragement.

“Dear @narendramodi sir, thank you so much for your very kind words and your support and encouragement always. It has been a privilege to be a part of this team which has brought the cup home. We are deeply touched & overwhelmed with the happiness it has brought the entire nation,” Kohli replied.

PM Modi also congratulated Rohit Sharma for his splendid captaincy and appreciated his T20 career. The Indian skipper announced his retirement while addressing the post-match press conference in Barbados.

PM Modi praised all-rounder Hardik Pandya for his final over and Suryakumar Yadav for his splendid catch on the boundary line to dismiss David Miller. The prime minister thanked outgoing coach Rahul Dravid for his contribution to Indian cricket.
