India women vs South Africa women Test match: India put up a show with the bat on the first day of the one-off Test against South Africa at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday, June 28.

India posted a huge total of 525/4 in the 98 overs on the opening day, which is now the highest-ever tally of most runs on a single day of a Test match.

England women had racked up 431/2 against New Zealand at Lancaster Park, Christchurch in 1935.

After opting to bat first, Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma looked in remarkable touch as they stitched a record-breaking opening stand.

The star duo added 292 runs for the first wicket, the highest opening partnership in women's Test cricket history.

This was also the second-highest partnership in a Women's Test for any wicket as Shafali and Smriti went past their previous best opening stand of 167 which they put up against England in Bristol in 2021.

The pair also left behind the previous highest Indian partnership for any wicket; 275 by Poonam Raut and Thirush Kamini against South Africa in Mysore in 2014.

While Mandhana smashed her second Test century, scoring 149 runs in 161 balls on the back of 27 fours and one six, Shafali scored her maiden double hundred.

She scored 205 runs in 197 deliveries with the help of 23 fours and eight sixes.

Jemimah Rodrigues reached her half-century before getting dismissed for 55 runs.

Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur remained unbeaten on 42 runs with Richa Ghosh alongside on 43 runs as India finished the first day on a high.

For South Africa, Delmi Tucker picked up two wickets whereas Nadine de Klerk took a wicket as well.
